Frequently Asked Questions
We know that many questions may arise before starting therapy. Here, we answer the most common questions we receive from people who contact our clinic.
Parents play a crucial role in the therapeutic process for a teenager with depression. Their role includes: creating a safe, nonjudgmental family environment where the adolescent can express how they feel; not minimizing the young person’s suffering; maintaining routines and structure at home; accompanying them to appointments if they agree; and being receptive to the psychologist’s guidance. At MadridPsicoterapia, we include parent counseling sessions as part of the treatment so that parents can support their child as effectively as possible without overprotecting them or invalidating their experience.
The use of antidepressant medication in adolescents is subject to stricter clinical criteria than in adults. Fluoxetine is the only antidepressant approved in Spain for use in children and adolescents under 18 years of age, starting at age 8, and it must be prescribed by a child and adolescent psychiatrist. For mild and moderate depression, psychotherapy (especially CBT) is the treatment of first choice for adolescents. In moderate-to-severe cases or when there is no response to psychotherapy, a combination of psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy may be considered under psychiatric supervision. At MadridPsicoterapia, we coordinate with child and adolescent psychiatry when the case warrants it.
Yes, and it’s one of the most visible ways to detect depression in young people. Depression directly affects concentration, memory, motivation, and the ability to work hard, which leads to a decline in academic performance that sometimes precedes other, more recognizable symptoms. This can become a vicious cycle: declining academic performance leads to more frustration and low self-esteem, which in turn deepens the depression. Psychological treatment addresses both emotional symptoms and strategies for studying and managing academic stress. Often, an improvement in mood is accompanied by a gradual recovery in academic performance.
