Specific Phobias

What Are Specific Phobias, and Why Don't They Go Away on Their Own?

One specific phobia It is an intense, persistent, and disproportionate fear of a specific object or situation: animals, blood, injections, heights, flying, driving, storms, or enclosed spaces. Anyone who suffers from it acknowledges that his fear is excessive, but even so, they feel they can't control it. Their heart races, they start to shake, sweat, or even feel paralyzed. The natural response is to avoid whatever is causing the discomfort, and it is precisely that avoidance that fuels and perpetuates the problem.

According to epidemiological data from Spain, specific phobias are the disorder of anxiety most common, with an estimated prevalence of 10–12% of the general population. Despite its high incidence, many people wait years to seek help because they downplay the impact that fear has on their daily lives: turning down a promotion that involves to fly, stop getting blood tests because of fear of blood, skip field trips because fear of heights or always having to rely on someone else to get around because you're afraid to drive.

What distinguishes a phobia from a simple fear is the degree to which it interferes with daily life. When fear influences your decisions, limits your autonomy, or causes significant distress, it constitutes a clinical condition that warrants professional attention. Specific phobias are part of the spectrum of anxiety disorders, share common physiological mechanisms (such as overactivation of the sympathetic nervous system) and respond very well to appropriate psychological treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Preguntas frecuentes sobre las fobias

We know that many questions may arise before starting therapy. Here, we answer the most common questions we receive from people who contact our clinic.

Normal fear is proportional to the actual danger, adaptive, and does not interfere with daily life. A phobia is an intense, persistent, and disproportionate fear of an object or situation that objectively does not pose a real or proportional danger. The person recognizes that their fear is excessive but cannot control it. And most importantly: the phobia causes avoidance or significant distress that affects work, relationships, or daily activities.
The most common are a fear of animals (spiders, dogs, snakes, insects), a fear of blood/injections/wounds, a fear of heights (acrophobia), a fear of flying, claustrophobia (enclosed spaces), a phobia of vomiting (emetophobia), and a phobia of storms. Each has its own characteristics that influence how treatment is planned.
Specific phobias are among the anxiety disorders that respond best to treatment: gradual in-vivo exposure has success rates of 80–90% even in just a few sessions (sometimes 3–5 intensive sessions are enough for simple phobias). The goal is for the object or situation to stop limiting your life. It’s not about “curing the fear” but rather about ensuring that fear no longer dictates your decisions.
It is the shortest treatment among anxiety disorders. For simple phobias (animals, heights, flying), 3 to 8 sessions using a well-structured exposure protocol may be sufficient. Phobias of blood or injections require a specific technique (applied tension) to prevent fainting. At MadridPsicoterapia, we assess your phobia during the first session and recommend the most effective treatment plan.

Both work just as well. Choose the one that's most comfortable or practical for you. Some people prefer to leave the house and go to a specific place, while others prefer to log in from their couch. You can also mix and match depending on what works best for you each week or switch things up.

Of course, for the online session, we ask that you be in a quiet place where no one will disturb you for 50 minutes, have a device with a camera and microphone (computer, tablet, or cell phone), and a reliable Wi-Fi connection. That's all.

We try to make everything easy. The price of an individual psychology session is 55 euros for consultations year-round. No matter where you are.

Once you feel that the professional relationship is working, you can choose the balance bonus and ahorrar un 9% of the cost of the sessions. Appointments can be scheduled individually.

You tell us what brought you here, what’s on your mind, or what you’d like to change. We’ll ask you a few questions to better understand your situation. We’ll address your concerns. And we’ll assess whether therapy can help you and what the process would look like. You’ll leave with a clear idea of what to expect and a framework for moving forward.

Because before you spend any money, we want you to get to know us and be sure that this is what you're looking for. It's an opportunity for both of us: you see if you feel comfortable, and we assess whether we can help you. And then we each make our own decision.

We don't work directly with insurance companies, but we'll provide you with an invoice so you can submit it to your insurance provider if they offer reimbursement. Check with your insurance provider to see if they cover individual therapy sessions with private psychologists in Madrid.
